| | 39.3 miles. 3,600 walkers. 8.2 million dollars raised. record breaking.
Up until mile 16, everything was going great. 16-20 were tough. 20-26 lasted a miserable eternity. The crew cheering us on would tell us less mileage to get us motivated - we didn't catch on until later - sons of bitches. But it is over. It was fun, but I'm glad it is over.
I'm really proud of us. It was harder than I thought it was going to be - meaning - I didn't think we would hurt until later - not during- but during definitely happened. No blisters - just sore muscles.
You can't help but feel like you made a difference. While we were walking, 145 people died of breast cancer and 670 were diagnosed - every 3 minutes. Only 10% is genetic. We saw YOUNG bald women with young husbands and young children. That could easily be me, my sister or my best friends - too easily.
You put a sign on your back for who you were walking for. To see women walking for themselves, men walking for their wives, women walking for their mothers, or people with lists of 10 people that had died, was heartbreaking. My mom and I walked for a family friend. Her mother died of breast cancer when she was 16, she died of breast cancer 4 years ago and her son killed himself 2 years ago.
It was a good weekend - walking and talking for days. I learned a lot - about the cause, about the disease, about endurance, and that midwestern women love some biking shorts, no matter how big the booty.
